Dive Brief:
- ADP announced that they will be adding Apple Pay to their ALINE services. Any who have an ALINE card can now use the service, which allows users to make payments directly from their phones or mobile devices.
- ADP's ALINE serves 1.5 million users and "has experienced double-digit year-over-year growth" in recent years, Gary Lott, division vice president and general manager at ADP, told HR Dive in an email.
- Payroll cards similar to ALINE have received criticism for the attached fees in the past. ADP's ALINE card does come with fees, but allows users to withdraw their money from an ATM for free at least once a month.
Dive Insight:
Such payroll cards are often utilized by the "underbanked," or those who cannot afford to pay bank fees and therefore do not have access to direct deposit services. Increased mobile capabilities with the cards, paired with their quick growth, has lead to further innovations on mobile. Apple Pay is a secure, private system, as no card numbers are stored anywhere on the device or on Apple servers.
ADP's new alliance with Apple Pay "will offer ALINE cardholders another option to access their paycheck that provides both increased mobility and usability," Lott said.
Apple Pay works with iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch.
