Dive Brief:
- Tech Crunch reports that Zenefits continues to overhaul its management team with the hiring of Beth Steinberg as its first CHRO and human relations officer.
- Steinberg held similar posts at Nike, Electronic Arts and Facebook. She also founded Mensch Ventures, a people and talent advisory company. Steinberg told TechCrunch that her focus will be on moving Zenefits forward, adding that Silicon Valley hadn't spent enough time developing leaders.
- The company's CEO told Tech Crunch that the organization is trying to build a strong and diverse team of tech industry professionals. He added more executives to the C-suite, which was all male before Steinberg and one other female executive were hired, says Tech Crunch.
Dive Insight:
Steinberg is among a new group of women executives who are bringing a diverse perspective to what was a classic male-dominated tech company. She'll be the latest leader to have to revamp a company's HR department.
Zenefits is on the tail end of a long rebuilding process. The San Francisco-based company has struggled to meet its financial goals, ousted its CEO, faced heavy penalties for licensing issues, lost another CEO, laid off almost half its workforce and, finally, settled a misclassification suit with with U.S. Department of Labor.
While the company previously had a head of people, Steinberg's elevation to the C-suite could be a signal that the company will place greater focus on HR issues.
