Dive Brief:
- The world of HR is filled with acronyms (FMLA, DOL, HRIS, BYOD and ADA, to name a few) and unintentionally humorous situations, according an article at Business Management Daily.
- BMD editorial director Patrick DiDomenico writes that it's no surprise that HR often is a bit stunned by some employees' misinterpretations of the laws and policiies that are meant to protect them in the workplace.
- This fall, DiDomenico's HR Specialist organization surveyed HR pros, asking them to "share their best stories of situations in which employees totally misunderstood, misinterpreted or completely maligned an employment law or company policy."
Dive Insight:
Among the most outlandish things employees said or did:
One HR professional reported that an employee believed health insurance premiums should be refunded because he didn't use any healthcare in the past year. He was given the bad news that preiums are non-refundable, since they pay for the insurance coverage.
Another employee initially refused to remove his cowboy hat on the job (he worked for the Federal Reserve Bank, so security cameras were important) because he said "being a cowboy is a religion in Oklahoma."
No doubt there are many more HR stories that could make DiDomenico's list, which is worth a visit for the other four fun tales.
