Manufacturers across the country will open their doors to students, educators and others Friday — Manufacturing Day — aiming to grow their talent pipelines and establish a future workforce.
Others will visit schools and host competitions, all with the primary aim of presenting manufacturing as a viable career option, according to the Manufacturing Institute, the nonprofit workforce development arm of the National Association of Manufacturers.
The industry has struggled to recruit workers in recent years, pointing to a shift in mindset among prospective talent. Many in the latest generation to join the workforce have turned away from jobs in the manufacturing field, instead seeking jobs that may better accommodate remote work or roles that appear more tech-driven.
