Permanent permission to review work eligibility documents remotely won’t be granted before the temporary allowance sunsets, the government revealed Tuesday.
Previously slated for May, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has delayed to August a final rule that would allow employers to review new hires’ work eligibility documents remotely for Form I-9 purposes.
Some employers have done so for years now, under a temporary allowance made during the early weeks of the pandemic. That exemption is due to sunset July 31, however.
Employers should prepare for the shift by standardizing a physical review process and creating recordkeeping rules, attorneys previously said.
