Dive Brief:
- Skype has released a brand new tool for recruiters that enables them to test coders in real time while they use the video conferencing to conduct interviews, ZD Net reports. Previously, two separate products needed to be used to achieve the same results.
- The code-editor, also called Skype Interviews, works within the Skype browser, allowing candidates to run code and test the results in one place. It supports C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Python and Ruby coding languages.
- This new tool doesn't require any downloads or installs of Skype as it works directly in the Microsoft Edge and Chrome browsers. This provides a more efficient and streamlined interview experience.
Dive Insight:
Anytime a product can be used to simplify interviews for technical roles, it's good for recruiters and candidates. Very often, technology can stand in the way of verifying the skills of candidates, as such tests can be clunky experiences that give a poor perspective on what working at the company is actually like.
When well-done, such tests can be useful for recruiters trying to quickly sort out the best from the rest. It takes some of the guesswork out of recruitment, too. With one in three tech workers going remote by the year 2020, the ability to confirm skills through pre-employment testing is even more key. Such testing processes may be a way for employers to look for skilled individuals beyond ivy league colleges, as many skilled workers can come from non-traditional backgrounds.
