Dive Brief:
- When asked whether the HR function today deserves a seat at the C-suite table, it might be tempting to answer with a resounding “yes” – but companies must ask if HR leaders today actually have the skills required to make valuable contributions, according to an article at Humanresoucesonline.net.
- A recent study by Aon Hewitt recorded insights from 45 chief human resources officers (CHROs) at leading global organizations on what skills would make them more efficient.
- Aon reported that in order for future CHROs to be successful, they would need six key skills, including data-based thinking, architect-like management and a proactive mindset.
Dive Insight:
The six skills uncovered by Aon included in all: data and analytics-based decision making; being the architect and assessor of shifts in organizational culture; proactively mapping out the capabilities an organization needs for its future strategy; taking up the role of ‘talent scout’ for internal and external talent; understanding the impact of technology, and asking organization-specific questions.
“HR is used to helping other parts of the organization with succession planning and leadership development, but could improve in the area of developing its own leaders,” said Dave Kompare, partner, Aon Strategic Advisors & Transaction Solutions.
To ensure strong leaders, HR needs to create an environment that will allow potential leaders to use these six skills, he added.
