Dive Brief:
- Technology and math are the dominant skills required for the top 10 jobs in the University of California, San Diego Extension's list of Emerging careers.
- The report, released Tuesday, provides salary, age and gender breakdown of each career. It also includes the projected 10-year growth of each job and insights from workers on "micro trends and niche skills" that define their industries.
- Previously, UC San Diego Extension had produced the Hot Jobs Report. Based on surveys and feedback, the focus of the annual list shifted to include emerging and rising number of high-growth professions that demand multiple skills.
Dive Insight:
In a time when Boomers are reinventing themselves in second or third careers, Millennials are gravitating to careers with a long tail. That tech jobs dominate the list of emerging nationwide careers just reinforces STEM learning for Gen Z and suggests more tech training in the workplace for companies that want to retain and attract new talent.
Not surprising is that the report finds that strong employment opportunities are available for workers who continue to pick up new skills and deeper knowledge. The takeaway: "A college degree, while increasingly necessary for a good job, is no longer sufficient by itself for interesting, well-compensated lifelong employment."
