Dive Brief:
- While it may come somewhat as a shock, almost half (46%) of employers today don't verify that employees who drive for business reasons have proper auto insurance policies, according to a new survey.
- The 10th Annual Mobility Benchmark Report from Runzheimer, a business vehicle, relocation information and expense management services provider, also found that while the move to mobile apps rolls on, 48% of employers still rely on a manual business mileage entry process.
- There is some good news, however, as the survey found that 75% of participants automate some part of their travel and expense programs.
Dive Insight:
Managing business travel and company vehicles is not commonly the concern of HR leaders and HR departments. But having this type of data might prove useful for an HR leader looking to delve into the weeds when it comes to how their employer spends money.
For example, one HR-related area of the survey involves relocation. The Runzheimer survey found that relocation policies continue to provide more generous packages to executives and existing employees versus new hires. And while it makes sense to reward existing employees, it also could end up hindering an employer from landing top talent looking to change jobs via relocation.
But on the topic of not verifying employee auto insurance coverage or continuing to use a manual strategy to manage business mileage, HR could talk to risk management and ensure that the company isn't taking unnecessary risks with its employees who drive as part of their jobs.
