The Predictive Index and HR Dive’s studioID jointly released a new survey that highlights how the perception of success has changed for people managers and the challenges they face in achieving it within their organizations.
A survey of 220+ management-level leaders found that 86% of survey respondents say their views of what makes a successful people leader have changed in the last five years. However, survey respondents also indicated that their organization’s views have not evolved along with theirs.
Not only are people managers grappling with barriers to success, but they’re doing it in an environment where organizations don’t realize expectations have changed. The survey results uncovered significant problem areas where organizations are impeding people managers and their success including:
- Obscured responsibilities. More than one-quarter of organizations (26%) in our survey today do not clearly define roles and responsibilities for people leaders.
- Misaligned training opportunities. Nearly one in four survey respondents (23%) say their organizations view insufficient training as one of the most significant challenges impeding people leaders’ success.
- Undefined success metrics. Nearly one-third of organizations (30%) in our survey do not have a formal way to measure the success of people leaders (e.g., a rubric).
- Ignored well-being. Only 10% of organizations in our survey prioritize promoting healthy work-life balance as a key criterion for successful people leadership.
This report gives HR executives a vantage point from which to recognize the critical problem areas and implement solutions—before losing the interest of top talent or losing top talent altogether. This comes when “more employees are staying in jobs where they're just satisfied or even under-satisfied, and engagement is suffering,” explains Will Otto, the VP of Talent Optimization at The Predictive Index, the data-driven HR platform to hire top performers, develop effective managers, and retain your people.
